Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is one of the most important and widely celebrated festivals in India and among Indian communities across the world. The festival of lights symbolizes the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness.
In 2025, Diwali celebrations will begin with Dhanteras and conclude with Bhai Dooj. The main day of Diwali, Naraka Chaturdashi, will be observed on October 20, 2025.
Here’s the five-day Diwali 2025 calendar:
1. Dhanteras – October 18
The festival begins with Dhanteras, a day dedicated to Lord Dhanvantari, the god of health and Ayurveda. People buy gold, silver, or utensils, as it is believed to bring prosperity and good fortune.
-
Auspicious Muhurat: 12:18 PM (October 18) to 6:10 AM (October 19).
Some households perform Lakshmi Puja on this day, while others do it on the main Diwali day, October 20.
2. Choti Diwali – October 19
The day before Diwali is known as Choti Diwali. Families celebrate by lighting diyas (lamps), decorating their homes, and sharing sweets with friends and relatives. It sets the tone for the grand celebrations that follow.
3. Naraka Chaturdashi (Badi Diwali) – October 20
The main day of Diwali, Naraka Chaturdashi, marks Lord Krishna’s victory over the demon Narakasura, symbolizing the victory of light over darkness.
In North India, Diwali is also celebrated as the day when Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile.
Homes are illuminated with diyas and lights, decorated with rangoli, and filled with festive joy. People perform Lakshmi Puja, seeking blessings from Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity.
4. Govardhan Puja – October 22
On this day, devotees celebrate Lord Krishna’s lifting of Govardhan Hill to protect villagers from torrential rain sent by Lord Indra. Offerings of various dishes, sweets, and prayers known as Annakut are made to Lord Krishna. Devotees also sing bhajans and recite prayers throughout the day.
5. Bhai Dooj – October 23
The festival concludes with Bhai Dooj, a celebration of the bond between brothers and sisters, similar to Raksha Bandhan. Sisters apply tilak on their brothers’ foreheads and pray for their long and happy lives, while brothers give gifts as a token of love and protection.
✨ Wishing everyone a joyous, prosperous, and safe Diwali 2025!
