The Kangana Ranaut-led film Emergency witnessed a notable uptick in its box office collections on Republic Day, providing a much-needed boost to its performance. Chronicling the tumultuous period of the 1975 Emergency in India, the film generated interest for its suspenseful plot and intense acting, yet came under heavy competition and scrutiny from its launch.
Box Office Journey: Mixed Fortunes for Emergency
Emergency started with ₹2.5 crore on the first dayday, ₹3.6 crore on the second day and ₹4.25 crore on the third day. Yet, it declined week by week, with ₹1.05 crore on day 4, ₹1 crore each on days 5 and 6, and ₹0.9 crore on day 7.
By the end of its first week, the film had accumulated ₹14.3 crore at the India box office. In its second week, Emergency showed signs of recovery, earning ₹0.4 crore on day 8, ₹0.85 crore on day 9, and ₹1.15 crore on day 10, bringing its total collection to ₹16.70 crore.
Republic Day Boost and Theatrical Occupancy
Republic Day constituted a turning point for Emergency, with a cinema occupancy of 23.08% being achieved in total, of a cinema audience. Morning shows recorded 8.55% occupancy, while afternoon shows surged to 26.57%. Evening programs reached a high of 38.17%, but night programs fell to 19.01%, film trade portal Sacnilk reports.
Despite these improvements, the film struggled to sustain consistent momentum, facing competition from larger commercial releases.
Competition with Sky Force
Box office debacle, another patriotic action drama, Sky Force, starring Akshay Kumar and Veer Pahariya eclipsed vedic release, Emergency. Sky Force got a strong start on day 1 collecting ₹12.25 crore and continued to grow, on day 2 it added ₹22 crore and on day 3 it added ₹27.50 crore. By Republic Day, the film had amassed ₹61.75 crore.
To the credit of Sky Force, it has held onto a massive overall theatrical occupancy rate of 42.44%, throughout 42 days and is still drawing crowds nationwide in India on the 26th January.
Star-Studded Cast and Challenges for Emergency
Directed and headlined by Kangana Ranaut, Emergency features a stellar ensemble cast including Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Milind Soman, Mahima Chaudhry, Vishak Nair, and the late Satish Kaushik. The movie investigates controversial and historical political history of 1975, particularly socio-political turbulence during the Emergency era.
Nevertheless, its release followed protests of major magnitude in Punjab which put the film off the air in most theatres in Ludhiana, Amritsar, Patiala, Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur and Bathinda. These disturbances together with severe competition from other films, such as Sky Force, impacted the cumulative box office.
Parallel Release: Azaad
Along with Emergency, Aaman Devgn and Rasha Thadani’s debut movie Azaad also released in theatres on January 17. However, Azaad struggled to make a significant impact at the box office, further highlighting the competitive landscape for releases during this period.
Conclusion
Although Emergency also presented some of the moments that seemed to be brimming with the potential for future success, for example, with its Republic Day upswing, the box office run for the feature film represents a reminder of the difficulties encountered when attempting to compete in today’s saturated entertainment market. Despite its compelling narrative and strong cast, Emergency faced hurdles including regional protests and the overshadowing presence of blockbuster competitors like Sky Force.
The film remains a notable entry in Kangana Ranaut’s filmography, reflecting her commitment to telling bold, politically charged stories. On the other hand, the commercial success of the film reveals the unpredictable success in the box office of the Indian film market.
