The world’s religious procession of the 45-day old Mahakumbh Mela which takes place on grand scale reached its climax last night at the Triveni Sangam of Prayagraj, on the day of Mahashivaratri. The final day of the sacred event witnessed a massive turnout of 1.53 crore (15.3 million) devotees, bringing the total pilgrim count to an unprecedented *66.30 crore (663 million), according to official figures released by the government.

Spectacular Flypast and Flower Showers

During the grand finale, the Indian Air Force (IAF) planned breathtaking flypast over the Sangam sky on Wednesday afternoon. Fighter planes and transport aircraft flew overhead as pilgrims, as did the concluding rituals of the Mahakumbh, offering a majestic aspect to them.

Additionally, helicopters showered 120 quintals of rose petals over the devotees gathered at the Sangam, symbolizing a divine blessing. Throughout the event, six major snans (holy baths), including the three Amrit Snans Makar Sankranti (January 14), Mauni Amavasya (January 29), and Basant Panchami (February 3)—were marked with elaborate floral tributes, with 20 quintals of petals used on each occasion.

A Historic Gathering of Devotees

This survey was conducted on 19 AM Wednesday and was planned to finish at 8:09 AM on Thursday.

Statistics of pilgrims collected at various intervals on Wednesday demonstrated the enormous attendance:1.

  • 2: 00 AM – 11.66 lakh (1.16 million) bathers
  • 4: 00 AM – 25.64 lakh (2.56 million) bathers
  • 6: 00 AM – 41.11 lakh (4.11 million) bathers
  • 8: 00 AM – 60.12 lakh (6.01 million) bathers
  • 10: 00 AM – 81.09 lakh (8.1 million) bathers
  • 12: 00 PM – 1.01 crore (10.1 million) bathers
  • 2: 00 PM – 1.18 crore (11.8 million) bathers
  • 4: 00 PM – 1.32 crore (13.2 million) bathers
  • 6: 00 PM – 1.44 crore (14.4 million) bathers
  • 8: 00 PM – 1.53 crore (15.3 million) bathers

This overwhelming participation surpassed the initial government estimate of 45 crore (450 million) devotees, making it the largest-ever Mahakumbh in history.

High-Level Monitoring and Security Arrangements

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath closely monitored the event’s progress from a control room in Gorakhpur. Security and administrative personnel remained on high alert to ensure the safety and smooth conduct of the festival.

Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP), Prashant Kumar, praised the police personnel and security services for their contribution. He pointed out that during the entire 45 days of the event, over 30,000 lost persons were reconnected with their families. Although many people, the festival finally ended without serious unforeseen events, that is, a big victory so far in terms of security and management.

Global Participation and Spiritual Significance

The Mahakumbh Mela drew pilgrims not only (from) within India but from all over the world, with entries from various foreign countries included. Several international attendees participated in the rituals, bathed in the holy waters, and received *deeksha (spiritual initiation) into Sanatan Dharma. The program demonstrated the deep, rich cultural and spiritual heritage of India, one that enhances its stature in the world.

Formal Conclusion and Closing Ceremony

Although the official bathing muhurat extended until Thursday morning, all administrative and security arrangements remained in place for the convenience of the devotees.

On Thursday, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is set to formally announce the conclusion of Mahakumbh 2025 in a special closing ceremony at the Mela grounds. The program will cover several cultural events, religious talk sessions, and a climax with rituals, concluding this massive spiritual meeting.

Through record-breaking attendance, effortless management, and colorful celebrations, the Y2025 Mahakumbh Mela has again proven its status as the sprawling world’s largest religious congregation, and in doing so has left a deep mark of faith, devotion, and unity to last a lifetime.
