Six youths, of which three were females, were dead and one was severely injured when their MUV, which was driving at a high speed, crashed with the trailer of a container near the ONGC Chowk in Dehradun. Introducing the picture, Circle Officer (City) Neeraj Semwal stated that the car purchased the previous day was left in the shape of the Innov9 and six people were killed on the spot after the consequent ramming into the truck from behind.
The Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, who was on a two day tour of Uttarkashi and Rudraprayag, condoled the mishap. “It is extremely sorrowful hearing news over the dead of six youths in an accident in Dehradun. I pray God to give eternal rest and comfort to all the dead and strength to the families that have lost their beloved ones,” he said.
The deceased has been named as Kunal Kukreja, (aged 23 years), Atul Agrawal – aged 24 years, Rishabh Jain – 24 years, Navya Goel – 23 years, Kamakshi – 20 years, Guneet – 19 years of age. While all were from Dehradun, Kukreja hailed from Himachal Pradesh only. The critically injured seventh passengers Siddhesh Agrawal (25) years had been admitted to the Synergy Hospital.
The car belonged to Sunil Agarwal from Saharanpur who was notorious firecracker businessman of the state who had purchased this car on Dhanteras. His son Atul, who was driving, had taken six friends to Dehradun. According to Eyres, Atul friends wanted them to throw a party to mark the arrival of a new car. Subsequently they had a dinner at Siddhesh’s home in Jakhan and then drove around.
Investigation revealed from the CCTV videos that the MUV was; moving slowly initially then increasing the speed before the accident. Inspector KC Bhatt investigating the incident said a luxury car set decoy and sped past the MUV thereby making Atul speed up in the chase. The MUV driver failed in observing the right time to proceed at the intersection; he was rammed at the left side of the truck.
The resulting force was devastating and lead to the complete collapse of roof of the MUV decapitating two victims. Inspector Bhatt said they are now looking into the legal procedures as no charges can be brought against the dead driver Atul.
