The strong condemnation by the Sealdah court on the actions of the police officers who participated in the R.G. The West Bengal political scenario has been rocked by the Kar hospital rape and murder case with the BJP again attacking Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. BJP has been demanding her resignation, on the grounds of negligence and on the charge of complicity of her [own] police force and hospital administration ratings.
Court’s Observations
According to the order of the judge of Sealdah session, Mr. Anirban Das on Monday, officers of Tala police station have come up with serious flaws. Sub-inspector Subrata Chatterjee, assistant sub-inspector Anup Dutta, and additional officer-in-charge of the women’s grievance cell, Rupali Mukherjee, faced scathing criticism for their roles in mishandling the investigation.
The court pointed to evidence showing that SI Subrata Chatterjee made an illegal entry in the General Diary (GD) under GD No. 542, August 9, 2024) which states that he was in the police station under false pretenses. “It is shocking that the concerned SI did not hesitate to admit such illegal acts standing in the witness box, the judge noted. Chatterjee claimed he acted on instructions but failed to name the person responsible.
ASI Anup Dutta was reprimanded for having bestowed unnecessary liberty to the accused Sanjay Roy, which damaged the integrity of the investigation. Also, Rupali Mukherjee was withdrawn for mishandling the evidence (by collecting the accused’s mobile and leaving it unsupervised at the station) resulting in serious doubts about her ability.
Allegations Against Hospital Authorities
The court also turned its focus to the R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital administration has accused it of attempting to turn the crime into a whitewash. Judge Das stated, “Efforts were made to show the death as a suicide to protect the hospital authorities from facing consequences.
The directly responsible for dereliction of duty were the former principal Sandip Ghosh and Medical Superintendent cum Vice Principal (MSVP) Sanjay Basisth. The court remarked that their actions cast doubt on their intentions and suggested a deliberate attempt to suppress evidence.
Political Fallout
The BJP did not let go of its observations from the court to attack Mamata Banerjee, not just as a Chief Minister but as the home minister of the state. BJP Bengal co-minder Amit Malviya accused Banerjee of orchestrating a cover-up to shield influential individuals linked to her party, the TMC. “This is exactly what Mamata Banerjee wanted destroy evidence, set up someone pliable to take the blame, and protect influential individuals, Malviya wrote on social media.
Whether it’s of a political party, organisation or government,” concurred BJP president Sukanta Majumdar, calling for Banerjee’s resignation. The chief minister should own responsibility, issue public apology and step down. According to Majumdar, the court’s recourse to the terms ‘illegal’ and ‘surprised’ in relation to the police in Kolkata shows flagrant failures during the tenure of her [or his] dispensation”.
Implications and Public Outcry
The court’s ruling has added to public pressure on the government’s response to the rape and killing of a junior doctor, an event that has already disrupted the state. Activists and opposition leaders say that the case is a manifestation of the systemic failures of law enforcement and healthcare administration.
As a consequence, political consequences of the court’s remarks will certainly increase including the BJP taking advantage of the situation to question the leadership of Banerjee in the context of the approaching elections. In the meantime, attention continues to be paid to achieving justice as well as to providing retribution to those who are responsible for the breakdowns.
The case has emerged as a flashpoint in West Bengal politics, as it illustrates the interface between law enforcement, governance and political responsibility. While the dispute is still unfolding, the political and judicial responses of the government are under close scrutiny.
