A massive crowd gathered in anticipation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the Ghonda assembly constituency, marking the official launch of the BJP’s campaign for the upcoming Delhi elections. Party supporters and workers filled the venue, chanting slogans and eagerly awaiting Modi’s arrival.
The political rivalry between the two major parties over Delhi has now taken a new turn, as the BJP has again fielded Ajay Mahawar for the Ghonda seat, and the AAP has fielded Gaurav Verma for the same seat. In this constituency, as well as other constituencies, the race will be an important test for the parties seeking control of the capital.
Supporters Express Enthusiasm for PM Modi
Clearly a buzz of BJP supporters was felt, and a great deal of this opened up to a showing of admiration for the Prime Minister and for a BJP sweep victory in Delhi.
“BJP should come… PM Modi should come. He is working for the development of the country. We need a leader who is on the side of the people,” explained one supporter.
Another BJP worker Pinky emphasized the work done by Modi towards upliftment of different segments of society, especially women. “We want BJP to win… PM Modi does good work for everyone. I live in an old village prone to floods. The announcements made for women’s benefits will also prevail. We are excited to hear him today,” she told ANI.
Local resident Lilavati voiced concerns about the state of cleanliness in Delhi, stating that Modi’s leadership was needed to bring about necessary changes. “PM Modi should come. There is no cleanliness in Delhi. We want him to win and work…”
The vast amounts of energy and backing of the public served to reinforce the Prime Minister’s own popularity and the BJP’s hopes for a strong showing in Delhi where the AAP has ruled for almost a decade.
BJP’s Ambitions in Delhi Elections
Just before Modi’s arrival to the city,BJP MP Manoj Tiwari expressed hope that the party led by the prime minister would win the next government in Delhi . He drew attention to the increasing frustration with the AAP administration, and the momentum among BJP followers.
“It is time for PM Modi to come. People are very enthusiastic. BJP will form a government in Delhi under the guidance of PM Modi… People are angry with Arvind Kejriwal… BJP is in the heart of Delhi,” Tiwari said.
The BJP, which has not been in power in Delhi for nearly 27 years, sees this election as a crucial opportunity to regain control. The party has lost in previous elections, winning only 8 of 70 in 2020. By contrast, AAP has maintained control, winning 67 and 62 seats in 2015 and 2020 respectively.
Meanwhile, Congress, which once ruled Delhi for 15 years under Sheila Dikshit, has been unable to win any seats in the last two assembly elections. The upcoming elections will determine whether the BJP can break AAP’s dominance or if Kejriwal’s party will continue its reign.
Delhi Elections 2025: Key Details
Delhi Assembly Elections are going to be held on February 5 in a single shift. Recount of votes will be carried out on February 8. 699 candidates are competing in the 70 assembly seats making this a closely contested election.
The BJP has focused its campaign on issues such as governance, cleanliness, infrastructure development, and alleged corruption under the AAP government. In contrast, AAP has highlighted its experience through education and healthcare and public welfare programs, in order to gain a new term to sustain its governance system.
The Ghonda constituency, where Modi made his campaign debut, is notable. The BJP managed to secure this seat in 2020 despite its overall poor performance. Maintaining Ghonda while extending its reach to other constituencies will play an important role in the party’s strategy.
The Political Landscape and What’s at Stake
The 2025 Delhi election offers a chance to show the vision for the city to all the leading political parties. Victory for the BJP will signify a decisive political change based on AAP’s decline and the regaining of the BJP’s political foothold in the governance of New Delhi. An AAP second victory would strengthen still more Kejriwal’s leadership and model of governance.
Although the BJP is trying to pull their leader Modi, AAP is depending on their ground level work and good governance. The Congress, though struggling in recent years, hopes to make a comeback by capitalizing on voter dissatisfaction with both AAP and BJP.
With the election day nearby the temperature of politics is rising in Delhi. Having Modi personally head the BJP’s election efforts, the party is actively campaigning in the direction of voters. To what extent this approach will lead to electoral success remains unknown, but there is a sense in the excitement of BJP followers at the Ghonda rally of a very heated political fight about to unfold.
Now everyone is looking towards February 5 when the destiny of Delhi’s governance will be decided.
