Jharkhand is set to experience unstable weather conditions starting February 19, with thunderstorms, lightning, and light rainfall predicted over various parts of the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an advisory, warning residents to be cautious as partial cloud cover is expected to develop from Tuesday, February 20.
IMD’s latest forecast states that an western disturbance from the east a low-level south-north trough are at play responsible for this weather change. The impact of these systems will likely result in scattered rain showers, lightning, and mild thunderstorms across Jharkhand for the next few days, possibly extending until February 23.
Temperature Trends in Jharkhand
There has been a slow increase in temperature in the state over the last couple of days. The minimum temperature across Jharkhand remained above 12 degrees Celsius in the last 24 hours, except in Chatra, where the temperature dipped to 11.8 degrees Celsius. On the other hand, Baharagora in East Singhbhum district recorded the highest minimum temperature at 18.4 degrees Celsius.
The capital city, Ranchi, registered a minimum temperature of 15.6 degrees Celsius, which is 2.8 degrees above the normal range for this time of year. The general trend points to a warming trend with temperature increases of 2-3 degrees in the near future.
Impact of the Upcoming Weather Change
People need to be prepared to deal with temporary lightning and local precipitation, which could interrupt normal daily life in some areas. Although the showers will be light, they may offer some temporary relief from the drying that is underway in many parts of the region. Nevertheless, exposure to thunderstorms and lightning has been recommended for farmers and manual workers.
Abhishek Anand, in-charge of the Ranchi Meteorological Centre, confirmed that the change in weather is attributed to the western disturbance. “Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and light rainfall are likely over Jharkhand on February 19 and 20 due to the movement of a western disturbance eastwards and a north-south trough at lower levels,” Anand explained.
Thunderstorm intensity is predicted to be relatively low throughout the critical area, with higher intensity possible in limited pockets. Authorities have advised people to be on high alert, particularly during the hours of peak lightning activity, and to adhere to required safety precautions.
Weather Outlook for the Coming Days
According to the IMD, cloudy spells will continue over the most of Jharkhand from February 20 onwards. Intermittent light rain and thunderstorms may persist from now until February 23, and weather should eventually become stabilized.
When the conditions in the state of Jharkhand varies from the winter season to pre-monsoon season, incidences of this kind of sudden changes of weather are not rare. Experts suggest that while the rising temperature trend may indicate an early onset of summer, occasional rainfall could still provide brief periods of relief.
Precautionary Measures for Residents
Based on the forecast of thunderstorms and lightning, residents are requested to comply with the following protective measures:.
- Avoid Open Areas During Lightning Stay indoors and refrain from standing under trees or near metal objects during thunderstorms.
- Secure Outdoor Belongings Storms may be accompanied by high winds, so securing any loose objects may prevent damage.
- Stay Updated with Weather Reports Follow local weather updates to stay informed about sudden changes.
- Take Precautions While Driving Roads may become slippery due to light rainfall; drivers should exercise caution.
As Jharkhand braces for the arrival of the next phase of the weather cycle, citizenry is advised to be protective and adopt appropriate precautions to protect themselves from any hazards.
