Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA for Ludhiana West constituency Gurpreet Gogi Bassi died late last Friday night. His family took him to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital where the doctor declared him brought dead. The 58-year-old politician is said to have been killed by a gunshot. But it is to this day uncertain whether he actually choked on food or if he committed suicide. Autopsy will clear the matter further as Ludhiana Police Commissioner Kuldeep Singh Chahal has declared.
Gogi had been active in politics since February 2022 and joined AAP as a politician when he defeated two-term Congress MLA Bharat Bhushan Ashu in Ludhiana West assembly seat. Well known for being a go-getter, Gogi ensured that he worked on local problems which consisted mainly of environmental related problems. Some of his main projects included the Buddha Nullah clean-up project. For establishing pipeline project, he has laid the foundation stone in 2022 and later annoyed with the construction progress so he demolished the pipeline which was under construction. His endeavors brought promises of faster actions by Vidhas Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan.
Gogi was even engaging in constituency issues only some few hours to his death. He consulted Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan and MP Sant Baba Balbir Singh Seechewal for proper cleanliness plan for Buddha Nullah. Further, he also donated money for public welfare when he visited the Prachin Sheetla Mata Mandir and promised to do something about a recent burglary incident.
It was politics that again came into Gogi’s family life as well In the present generation, the children of politicians are mostly rewarded with political appointments. His wife Sukhchain Kaur Gogi also fought MC polls but was defeated to Congress nominee lnderjeet Singh Indi. Here we saw how this particular family was devoted to public service even if they encounter some problems in politics.
The police officer of Ludhiana Sri. Chahal who reached the hospital soon after the incident said that the autopsy would help to know the actual cause of the death. He also described the impact which Gogi has made to advance the needful community.
The sudden death mourning Gurpreet Gogi Bassi has emerged as a big blow for Ludhiana West and political structure of Punjab. In future investigations, his commitment to dealing with local problems and the work he does for constituents will remain his legacy.
