An under-construction structure at Kannauj railway station came crashing down on Saturday afternoon burying as many as a dozen workers under the rubble. Six workers were rescued and taken to the hospital.

It took place at the time when, it is said, the shuttering, for the roof crumbled down and pulled the structure with it, as noted District Magistrate Shubhrant Kumar Shukl. People trapped under the debris are still alive and rescuers from NDRF and SDRF are trying to pull out the maximum number of survivors as quickly as possible. There is always a standby of ambulances and medical practitioners at the district hospital are on ‘alert’ incase of any eventuality.

The observers said that the displayed aimless motion, dust, falling beams, shouting people and attempts to save lives. Mahesh Kumar, a worker at the site, nearly fell victims, he said, concrete shuttering fell all of a sudden and workers who were present at height fell down on ground.

The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath has called on officials to ensure that the injured are rescued and taken to hospitals as soon as possible. Kannauj District administration has been assigned to Relief Commissioner Bhanu Chandra Goswami to sort out the rescue operations.

The North Eastern Railway has promised ₹50,000 to the severely injured worker and ₹5000 to a worker with minor injuries. Railway authorities led by the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) are on the scene, while an investigation by three SAG-grade officials is to be conducted in order to establish the circumstances under which the bridge fell.

First responders are still on stand by for rescue missions as the priority now is to save the trapped workers.
