Around 5,000 tourists in Himachal Pradesh’s Solang Nala, a popular ski resort, were rescued by Kullu police on December 27, 2024 after heavy snowfall. About 1,000 vehicles became stuck in the area because of fresh snowfall which prompted officials to launch the rescue operation.

In an official statement, Kullu police shared: About 1,000 vehicles were stuck in Solang Nala and around 5,000 tourists inside, some of whom were trapped due to fresh snowfall on the site today. And all have been rescued and brought to safe places. A rescue operation was ongoing.”

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Himachal Pradesh has been put on alert for snowfall and cold waves from December 27 and 28. Significant snowfall has been experienced in six districts — Lahaul Spiti, Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Shimla and Kinnaur — causing disruption to travel and the daily routine.

From December 29 onwards, a fresh cold wave is likely to dominate plain areas, Bilaspur, Hamirpur and Una districts including a severe cold condition to Mandi, Kullu and Chamba till January 1. On January 1, dense fog is also expected in isolated places, further jeopardising travel conditions, said the IMD.

On December 27 itself, the temperature in Shimla touched 5°C and a touch of up on December 28 was also predicted. But minimum temperatures are forecast to drop significantly past December 29.

Residents and travelers are advised by the IMD to exercise caution, particularly in snow affected areas where road blockages and disruption is expected.

With severe cold and heavy snowfall, Himachal Pradesh is set to witness a challenging weather phase and needs locals, as well as tourists to remain vigilant and prepared.
