The former prime minister Manmohan Singh, who led the liberalising reforms in the country in the nineties died at his residence here in Thursday night. He was 92. The news of Singh’s death was released by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi, where he was taken to the emergency ward in the evening hours around 8.30 PM in serious condition.

According to the bulletin of the AIIMS, “He was suffering age related illness and had sudden attack of unconsciousness at his residence on December 26”. Bailout processes were administered right at home. He was taken to the medical emergency of AIIMS Delhi at 8.06 pm. However, after all the efforts made failure to revived him and stated that he died at 9.51 pm,” this is according to the bulletin.

Singh, who was the Prime Minister for two terms in the congress-led United progressive Alliance or UPA government from 2004 to 2014, had been in a sickly state in the last few months. He is survived by his wife, Gurcharan Singh and his three daughters.

Indian Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and her mother, Sonia Gandhi, made a beeline for the hospital the moment his hospitalization was made public. The reforms in 1991 under Singh who was the Finance Minister when P V Narasimha Rao was the Prime minister were to precipitate liberalization as an economic forerunner seen as having switched the Indian economy at the precipice of insolvency.

Singh died on a very unfortunate moment while the Congress party was conducting the Congress Working Committee meeting at Belagavi in Karnataka where all the important congress leaders were present then. It is expected that party chief Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi are travelling to Delhi from Belagavi.
