PM Modi Announces ‘One Nation, One Election’ for Upcoming Winter Session, Pushes Uniform Civil Code

PM Modi unveiled plans for 'One Nation, One Election' to streamline elections and hinted at a Uniform Civil Code for social unity on Unity Day in Gujarat, honoring Sardar Patel.

During the celebration of Unity Day, the Centre revealed that the ‘One Nation, One Election’ idea will be approved by the Cabinet soon and may be tabled during this session of Parliament. Addressing the gathering on the 149th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel at the world’s tallest statue in Kevadia, Gujarat, which Modi visited for two days trip to his home state.

Under the One Nation, One Election, also known as ‘Parlak-Swabhiman Abhiyan,’ endeavor is made to hold Lok Sabha and state assembly elections at a single day or within one week to bring efficiency in the democratic setup. “One Nation, One Election will enhance Indias democrasy integrate resources and empower Indias progress towards a developed India,” stated Modi.

Also, he talked about the draft forward to the implementation of centralized United Civil code, which would mean identical law for every Indian citizen irrespective of religion regulating individual issues such as marriage, divorce, and succession. This association, Modi made, with Sardar Patel’s social integration idea, which he touched upon while speaking at the Red Fort.

Under ‘One Nation Identity’, Modi pointed towards Aadhaar, GST, One Nation One Power Grid, One Nation One Ration Card.

Speaking about Article 370, revoked in 2019 by the NDA government, Modi said that this article has been ‘dead forever’. Calling it a “wall”, he alleged that the constitutional provision prevented the effective implementation of the Indian constitution in the state. Modi said that for the first time, voting in recent assembly elections had been participated without discrimination and the local Chief Minister of the state taking the oath of office on the Constitution of the country.

The Prime Minister Modi used the occasion to scold the opposition saying that those who make high moral grounds of the constitution, are the first to violate it.
